Ever since Katie Couric raised awareness about colon cancer in the late 1990’s, her televised awareness has been associated with an increase in colonoscopy procedures. Her first husband, Jay Monahan died from colon cancer in 1998 and she, subsequently founded Stand Up 2 Cancer, an organization dedicated to bringing awareness to cancer research and treatments.
Colon cancer resides in the large intestine (the colon), which is part of the digestive track. According to the American Cancer Society, the rate of people being diagnosed with colon or rectal cancer each year has dropped overall since the mid-1980s, mainly because more people are getting screened and changing their lifestyle-related risk factors.
So, what signs should you look for?
The Mayo Clinic says the signs and symptoms of colon cancer can include:
- A persistent change in your bowel habits, including diarrhea or constipation or a change in the consistency of your stool.
- Rectal bleeding or blood in your stool.
- Persistent abdominal discomfort, such as cramps, gas or pain.
- A feeling that your bowel doesn’t empty completely.
- Weakness or fatigue.
- Unexplained weight loss.
However, not many people show symptoms.
At Nutri-Resource Centre, our patients have experienced success in receiving colon hydrotherapy treatments. Colon hydrotherapy is a safe and simple method that irrigates the large intestine with water to clean out the toxins and accumulated waste lining the walls of the large intestine. Removing years of buildup improves colon function (in addition to other normal functions). Got questions? Learn all about colon hydrotherapy here.
