“Microorganisms that form biofilms include bacteria, fungi and protists. One common example of a biofilm is dental plaque” (LiveScience). Biofilm, in short, is extremely complicated.
Within a biofilm, multiple types of bacteria and fungi share nutrients and DNA. They bypass the immune system and undergo changes. Since the biofilm requires less oxygen, biofilm is considered a hostile environment. It also forms a physical barrier that prevents most of our immune cells from detecting bacteria.
Our immune systems can influence antigens which can cause certain parasites to erode. According to News Live Science, “Infections related to biofilms can cause significant morbidity and mortality. The most vulnerable patients are those with implantable medical devices and those with a weakened immune system. The infections can be difficult to treat. This is because the immune system does not deal well with biofilms and biofilms are almost 1000 times more resistant to antibiotics than free-floating bacteria. In the case of infections caused by implantable medical devices, the device is often removed.”
