Everyone talks about the importance of nutrition. So what does it mean, exactly?
According to Dictionary.com, nutrition is the process of providing or obtaining the food necessary for health and growth. Foods vary greatly in their content. Our bodies need a good amount of protein, fats and carbohydrates. Fats give our bodies energy, protects our organs and supports cell growth. Proteins play a key role in creating and maintaining the cells in our bodies. Carbohydrates help to fuel our brains, muscles, kidneys, heart function and so much more.
The U.S. Preventive Medicine lists the following 8 tips to ensure your body is receiving a healthy amount of nutrients:
- Make half your plate fruits and vegetables.
- Make half the grains you eat whole grains.
- Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk.
- Choose a variety of lean protein foods.
- Compare sodium in foods.
- Drink water instead of sugary drinks.
- Eat some seafood.
- Cut back on solid fats.
